GALLSTONES – LIVING WITH PAIN

The most common problem in connection with the gall bladder, are the so-called gallstones. These are deposits which develop into something similar to small stones. In the gall bladder itself they do not do any harm. But if they travel into the bile duct, they can block it. The bile accumulates in the gall bladder and is blocked from moving into the intestine where it should be. Symptoms include cramp-like pain in the right upper abdomen that may radiate to the right shoulder. Additionally, you could have symptoms such as nausea or burping and, in severe cases, jaundice (yellowing of skin and mucous membranes.  This needs to be evaluated by a doctor). Fat, fried foods, coffee and cold water will not be tolerated and should be avoided. Gallstones can be very painful and may need to be operated on, but they are also very common.
